The foundation of modern Formula 1 racing began in 1946; however, the sport only became truly competitive in 1983 due to the rising cost of competition. Ever since its foundation was established, technological advancements have only seen Forumla 1 cars get faster and faster as engineers constantly evolved their engines and other defining aspects of their cars throughout time.
Leading into the early 1990's, when semi-automatic gearboxes and traction control were a natural progression in the sport, McClaren and Williams ruled the rest establishing a great rivalry. McLaren and Williams both won 16 championships in that period with McLaren winning 7 constructor championships and 9 driver champions ships (most famously with Ayrton Senna)and Williams winning 9 constructor championships and 7 driver championships.
1993 saw the end of McLaren's dominance throughout the 1980's and early 1990's due to Aryton Senna's death during the infamously rainy Italian Grand Prix in Imola. The death of arguably F1's best ever driver at the time came as a shock to the whole world as his death was witnessed live by millions. However, Senna's deathpaved the way for new safety regulations and increases in overall safety standards to ensure F1 would never lose another driver. There have been other deaths as a result of the injuries sustained by crashes, such as that of Jules Bianchi, Ferrari driver Charles LeClerc's long time friend and idol; however since Senna's death in 1993 no driver has suffered a direct fatal crash.
